The USS Oriskany is the largest artificial reef in the world. The “Mighty O,” is an Essex class aircraft carrier that served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars before venturing to its final resting place, 22 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. In 2006, the aircraft carrier, nicknamed “the Great Carrier Reef,” was purposely sunk in the Gulf of Mexica as part of an artificial reef pilot program.
