My son and I had a wonderful two days diving with Barry over our spring break trip to Maui. My son had completed his online training and pool work in California, so we made a reservation with Barry to finish his open water certification with a referral course. We scheduled five dives over two days — four for the certification and an extra one as a skills refresher. I’m already certified but hadn’t been diving in several years, so I was able to joined them on most of the dives. Barry is an outstanding instructor. He’s encouraging yet precise — striking a good balance between demonstrating skills, offering guidance, and ensuring that you’re truly mastering the material. Each dive began with required skills (like mask clearing, out-of-air drills, controlled emergency swim ascent, etc...), and then we used the remaining time to explore the beautiful nearby reefs. Over the two days, we saw sea turtles, eels, an octopus, and an amazing variety of fish, both large and small. On our final dive, Barry filmed us using professional gear, and the resulting video turned out great -- a fantastic memory of our first dives together for my son and me. We also really appreciated Barry’s flexibility. When my son caught a cold, Barry was happy to reschedule our second dive day to later in the week, which made for a much better and safer experience overall. Highly recommend Barry for anyone looking for a skilled, thoughtful, and safety-conscious dive instructor for a private or small group experience.
Barry is a fantastic dive instructor! My wife and I booked Barry to take us on a private introductory dive, and the whole process was very smooth. …
I had the pleasure of scuba diving in Maui this January 2026 with Barry alongside my 11-year-old daughter, who is working toward her PADI Open Water certification, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. I hadn’t been diving in about 10 years and, to my surprise, I was the one feeling a bit rusty and anxious—far more so than my daughter. Barry handled this beautifully. He was calm, patient, and reassuring, never rushed us, and made sure we were doing everything correctly and safely without adding any pressure. His steady presence made a huge difference and allowed me to relax and actually enjoy being back underwater. He was also fantastic on the practical side. When my old wetsuit turned out to be a bit too tight, Barry provided a replacement. All of the equipment we used was in excellent condition and clearly well maintained, which added another layer of confidence, especially given how long it had been since my last dive. The dives themselves were fantastic. As well as completing all of the training and certification for the PADI OW course we saw loads of beautiful fish, several turtles, and even a shark, which was an unforgettable moment. My daughter was absolutely in heaven the entire time. Barry was excellent with her: encouraging, serious but kind, and clearly very experienced at teaching and guiding younger divers in a way that builds confidence. By the end of the dives, we both felt comfortable, safe, and genuinely excited to dive more. My daughter is already talking about how she can’t wait to come back to Hawaii and scuba dive with Barry again—and honestly, I couldn’t agree more. If you’re looking for a calm, skilled, and genuinely excellent instructor and guide in Maui, Barry is outstanding.
