If you’re after technical dive training, I can personally testify that Marissa is the best! She is super knowledgeable and patient, and really enjoys teaching and helping her students gain new skills. She is a very clear communicator, giving direct feedback and is strict when required, which is what you really want when training to dive at this level. Marissa introduced me to the world of cave diving, and which I will always be grateful for. She is always generous with her time and knowledge, and will even take her students/customer to the supermarket for groceries!
I did my full cave training with Marissa and it was the best choice I could have made. She has very high standards and a genuine passion for creating capable cave divers. It’s really nice to see someone who has worked in this industry for …
Learning cave diving with Marissa was easily one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had in my diving career. From day one, the communication was incredibly open. We spent a lot of time discussing expectations and learning pace to ensure the progression actually made sense for me. Even with over 17 years of experience as a cave instructor, Marissa doesn’t use a "one-size-fits-all" approach. She is highly intuitive, adjusting her teaching style to how you personally process information. What sets her apart is that she doesn’t just teach you how to survive a dive; she teaches cave diving with a deep sense of conservation and respect for the environment. My perspective shifted from just "getting out safely" to focusing on positioning, line awareness, and refined movement. This approach makes the cave safer and more enjoyable for everyone who follows. It’s a rare perspective that completely changed how I see the overhead environment. She is excellent at keeping you within a "controlled comfort zone." She won’t take you beyond your ability, but she will challenge you until your awareness of the guideline, your surroundings, and your team improves drastically. You stop just "getting through" the dive and start understanding exactly what you’re looking for and why it matters. The entire course was private and deeply personalized. Marissa handled the logistics, we planned each day together, and every dive was followed by a thorough debrief. She doesn't just tell you what to fix, she explains the "why" behind it, which is where the real connection happens. For anyone considering an independent cave instructor over a standard dive shop, the value here is unmatched. You get more flexibility, more direct attention, and a curriculum built around the student rather than a rigid shop schedule. We also did a photo session that was fantastic; she went out of her way to find specific locations that matched the aesthetic we were looking for. Marissa is detail-oriented, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. She adjusted her approach based on my personality, a level of awareness you rarely find in the industry. A quick heads-up: If you just want to rush through a course to see pretty caves and get a certification card, this isn't the right fit. You’ll be challenged in ways you might not want. But if you care about safety, ethics, and becoming a truly skilled member of the cave diving community, it would be a mistake not to reach out to her. I feel incredibly lucky to have trained with her. I recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a deeper, more conscious cave diving education in Tulum.
