Unforgettable experience, giant mantas seemingly flying inches above your head. Earlier on the day of my scheduled dive Hurricane Hone passed just south of Hawaii. I was worried Big Island Divers might cancel the trip but luckily we went out as planned. Thank you to Divemaster Josh and the crew!
The only thing better than seeing mantas is knowing that the mantas you see have come freely to visit. An incredible experience that takes advantage of the natural conditions to attract local wild rays for night feeding. A must-do dive for any nature lover!
Why Sunlight on Water’s Manta Ray Tour Is the Best on the Kona Coast If you’re coming to the Big Island to experience the world-famous Kona manta rays, you deserve more than a rushed 20-minute dip in the water. At Sunlight on Water, our manta ray experience from Honokōhau Harbor is designed to be the highlight of your trip — not just a quick stop. Here’s what makes our tour different: 1. A Real Sunset Cruise — Not Just a Short Shuttle Ride Many manta tours depart just minutes from their site, meaning you’re in the water almost immediately. That may sound convenient, but you end up missing one of the best parts of being on the ocean: a true Hawaiian sunset at sea. Our tour includes a relaxing cruise down the Kona coast as the sun drops toward the horizon. You’ll have time to soak in the colors, enjoy the ocean breeze, and take amazing photos. It’s an experience in itself. 2. Dolphins & Whales? Absolutely. Because we travel along the coast instead of going straight from the dock to the manta site, our guests frequently encounter: Spinner dolphins jumping and bow-riding Humpback whales (in season) Turtles, flying fish, and more These wild encounters are often described as just as rewarding as the manta snorkel itself. Short-hop tours from Keauhou Bay don’t offer this opportunity — there simply isn’t time. 3. Up to a Full Hour With the Mantas Many visitors are surprised to learn that some manta tours keep snorkelers in the water for as little as 15–20 minutes. At Sunlight on Water, we believe this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience — so we don’t rush it. Our guests enjoy up to a full hour floating above the mantas, giving you: More time to watch their graceful barrel rolls Better chances of seeing multiple rays A calmer, more immersive, less crowded experience 4. A Tour That Feels Like an Adventure — Not a Conveyor Belt Where some tours focus on speed and volume, we focus on quality. From the moment you board, the trip feels like a true ocean adventure: Time to relax, enjoy, and explore Knowledgeable captains and crew who share history, marine life info, and local stories A more spacious, unhurried experience You’re not rushed to the water and rushed back out. You get a full, memorable evening on the ocean. 5. Leave the Crowds Behind Keauhou Bay manta tours are known for being packed, with multiple boats clustered tightly together at a small site. Our Honokōhau departure gives you access to the famous Manta Heaven / Manta Village sites with a smoother flow, wider area, and generally better viewing conditions. A Better Value for Your Vacation When you compare what you actually get, Sunlight on Water offers far more than a quick manta dip: Experience Sunlight on Water (Honokōhau) Keauhou Bay Tours Sunset Cruise ✔ Yes ✘ No Dolphin & Whale Sightings ✔ Likely ✘ Not included Time in Water ✔ Up to 1 hour ✘ Usually 15–20 minutes Overall Tour Length ✔ Full evening adventure ✘ Short shuttle ride Experience Style Relaxed, educational Quick, crowded Your Manta Ray Experience Should Be Magical At the end of the day, you’re not just booking a snorkel.
