Let’s get the silliness out of the way, the island has 2 Muslim villages, expect loudspeaker chanting at 4:40am. Food is good but meat/fish a little overdone… unless you order special (paid) fish/lobster. We did 6D/5N package, 2 divers, 1 snorkelled. Otherwise 5* diving, free tanks from the jetty. I lead a few night dives as a DM as these are unaccompanied. The guys check and sort everything on the boats. The villa rooms are really nice, maybe a little tired but still of a high standard. Note. WI-FI is only at the dining hall and a little patchy but you came here to dive five dive!! Snorkelling is well lead, my wife cannot swim and survived.

Two of us stayed for 6 days at the Borneo Divers resort in Mabul. The rooms were very nice and large. The staff looked after us very well and tried to fulfil all our wishes to the best of their ability. We were able to discover a lot during the dives and Sipadan definitely topped the list. The house reef right in front of the resort is also great for diving and snorkelling. Unfortunately, the only negative thing is the pollution caused by plastic waste on the island and in the sea. The resort organises clean up dives for this. Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem, but it is a start. I would love to come back

The resort is good and their planning is excellent. However the area around the island has mostly dead corals with little fish. We were taken to two spots where there was little to see. Their jetty area is nice. The guides are a bit of show off and not adept at showing the fish, corals etc. They can identify only a few fish. We saw a big turtle while snorkeling and the guide wanted to show off, he dived down and disturbed the turtle who promptly swam away and I was left floating with my camera. 😥 We had one trip to Kaplai and that was a much better place to do snorkeling. May be that is a better place to go instead of Mabul. Another thing we observed was most of the stray cats on the island were sick. Some kind of eye / nose infection or disease.
